GAETI2014-MSU
Day 20-Today was a great day, We showed our weebly web sites, Several were great. I will continue working on mine and use it in August to connect with my students and parents. I really feel as though I was the slowest to adapt to the new technology and worked slowly on the computer but I did learned lot and will be able to adapt what I have learned to use in the classroom. Today awards were given for art projects. We all had a good laugh at ourselves. I was very surprised at the award for favorite lesson plan. My plan was for jigsaw in the classroom.
This month has been a great experience. I enjoyed the fellowship with other teachers and I learned how much I did not know about technology in the classroom. Many of the new apps that are applicable to my classroom will aid in the presentation of US history. I now must work to become more familiar with the technology so I can use it in my classroom.
Thanks for a great experience.

GAETI-2014-MSU
DAY 18, Today we looked at differentiation and students with disabilities. We have a check list of of accommodations to help these students. I rarely have a student with an identified disability, however I am glad to have this list. I do have accommodations provided by my school however this list is a good addition to that list. We went to the TK Martin building and viewed the devices for physically handicapped children. After lunch we all worked on our lesson plans for Friday. I believe there is a lot of anxiety over this among the participants. At 3:30 we presented our art project. This was a lot of fun. Everyone enjoyed the art project and the presentations. Tomorrow , big day!!. I will be working late tonight.

GAETI-2014-MSU\DAY 17
Today started off well with Katy show and tell. She showed a video she shows in class and a website that students can see where they are on political issues. We then walked to Allen Hall to the computer room and Dr. Lee demonstrated Infographics, The web site was Piktochart.com. It was fairly easy to use. This is one I may use in class. Then autoboo. This site allows one to use voice overs on power points. I found it very difficult to use. Very frustrating day. We worked on lesson plans and art project. We have been exposed to many useful websites, We will have to work with them more to gain any mastery of them.

GAETI2014-MSU
DAY 16, Today we began with show and tell. I always get something from the other teachers. Billie showed us how she uses the state standards to show the students what they are doing and why. This is a very good idea. She also showed us her book on line and all the resources it has. We then walked to the ED building to learn more about Canvas. I believe I will use this program next year. It was not as difficult to run as some other programs we have seen. After lunch we were in 203 looking at PowerPoint. I find it easier to use that Prezi. I have a Promethean board which has its own software to use. I use the Promethean every day. I can create on the Prezi or Powerpoint and import to Promethean.
In the art class I have completed my project except for the glass pieces. Those pieces will not be cool enough to handle until tomorrow. Good day, but a lot of computer details to try to remember.

DAY 15, Monday June 23.
Today we began with a show and tell. I always get something useful from the other teachers. After show and tell Dr. Lee began to present on the iPad in the classroom. If you have an iPad and Apple tv you can use your iPad as you move around the room and it will be projected onto the promethean board. That would be something I would do. I walk about the classroom and it would be good to control the projection from anywhere in the class.
We the walked to the MSU library to see a program on Prezi. I was impressed with the display because I believe the motion would keep the attention of the students. After lunch we created a Prezi account and used it to produce a presentation. I was pleased that it was easy enough to do,even for me.
At 2pm a rain storm passed through so we did not walk to the library again. We began working on our web-quest project.
Katy is in the group I am in and she catches on quickly and types well so she helps this old guy catchup. I am becoming more familiar with the programs and how to use them. I have my art project almost finished. Today I cut glass for the stars on it. Tomorrow I will complete it with the addition of the stars to the project after they are fused.

GAETI2014-MSU
DAY 13 Very good day today, With all the Common Core presentations I have seen today Vincent Segalini from the Mississippi Department of Education presented the best explanation of CCSS that I have seen. I have a much better grasp of CCSS than before. His presentation was interesting, informative and full of humor. I will use the technique he used to analyze a photo or cartoon. We also identified several web sites that will be useful.
After lunch we went to the computer lab, not my favorite place. Dr. Lee showed us Canvas and scoopit. I am not as skilled in computer use and I have a difficult time following procedures to master the websites. I think there is a gremlin in the computer that knows when I sit down and then the computer does not do what it should. However I am learning new technology daily. In the art lab I have completed 90% of my project, and I like it.

Jeannette Bennett from the federal reserve came in and entertained us with much information that could be used in economics, US history government, Mississippi studies Spanish, and other classes. She had several hand outs and even cd's with info. Her presentation was great, lots of info and ideas that can enhance any class.
In the afternoon we worked on lesson plan development. This will be a great help in August.

Day 11
This morning Dr. Bracey led a discussion on school policy on BYOD. we divided into groups and discussed the policies in schools that we are in and then presented to the class our ideas on the bring your own device policy that some schools have. she then listed pros and cons for the idea. The most common idea was consistency in the school for the teachers and the administration. Several teachers contributed ideas and information on other subjects also.
We then gave our ideas of a presentation of what we would present to our home school staff about what we have learned in the institute. After lunch we met in the computer lab and shared what organizations we belong to. I have never used my MPE membership but would not be in a classroom with out the insurance it provides. The Mississippi Council for the Social Studies was also mentioned as was several language organizations.
Then to the computers. I am the least computer talented person in the room. I am having difficulty in grasping all the ideas and techniques to master the new stuff. I did get my competency and objectives posted to the Google drive page. I will take all these new ideas, websites etc. and filter through them and pick what I can master and use. I have many new ideas to incorporate more tech in the classroom.

GAETI-2014-MSU,
DAY 10--Today we have been exposed to so much information it is difficult to take it all in. Kimberly Lane from Dallas Texas showed us many different web sites that could be used in the classroom. I will have to look at them and play with the features of them to see which one I will be able to use in my classroom. I have used the twitter page in the past and I will use it in the future to communicate with my students to remind them of work that is due. I use a Promethean board in my class now with the software they provide. I will look at the other presentation software to see if I like it better such as Prezi. Several websites look as though they may be helpful in teaching practices, such as Teaching Channel, Teacher tube and Live binders.

GATI-2014-MSU
DAY 8. Today we met at the Economics building all day. the program was led by Dr Becky Smith. After introductions she gave us a brief over view of "What is economics". This was very interesting, she identified "choices" as a main factor especialy in personal economics. The video on How a Waitress make a pencil was great.
At noon sandwiches were delivered and we ate in the conference room. Dr. Cade Smith presented on service-learning.
This is more than just a one time service project but a reciprocal learning process with reflection.
Dr. Shaffett presented on personal finance, and had several handouts that could be used in class. Dr. James Wilcox presented from USM via video conference. He told us about a service-learning project to involve students in a middle school in educating elders in fraud protection. Although I teach U.S. history I will be able to incorporate some of the economic information in my lessons.

In the computer lab Dr. Beriswill demonstrated how to create board games using excell. I not as computer literate as the younger teachers and have a difficult time catching on to some of the computer functions. I will be able to use this however I will have to work on the process. I believe I will be able to create games with some practice on my on.
The group activity we discussed (jigsaw) would be the main thing I will be able to use, and the power point hints.
We searched web sites and found many that could be used in my US history class.

Day 6 today with Dr Huang. In the morning session we looked at authentic learning motivation. We learned ARCS as a method to motivate students through getting their attention, relevence, how it effects me, reachable success to build confidence and satisfaction through success. Also we looked at scaffolding. The group I was in presented on chronological order with chunking of information based on decades, president, and era. The group presentation was a good exersize because we worked in a group and exchanged ideas as how to teach.
We also read from 20 Reading Stratigies To Meet the Common Core and exchanged the ideas from the chapter each one of us read. This led in to a discussion on jigsaw method of team based learning. All very good stratagies.
In the computer lab we looked at several useful websites that could be used and worked on our website on weebly.com
The TBL strategies ,I believe, will be most helpful next year.
At 3pm we went to the craft lab and continued work on our project. We used water colors to create a background and cut templates to place on our board. Most of the participants seem to have chosen a design that relates to the class they teach.

GAETI-MSU-DAY 3
GAETI, day 3 at MSU.
today we did an exersize with GPS devices. The clues led us to points on campus and then we looked for an envelop with a question. This was a fun activity. Some of the gps devices were not very accurate however. the word clues were the best way to locate the point we were looking for. The last point was the MSU library where we then toured the Templetom museum and the U.S. Grant library. Both very interesting.
After lunch a lesson on sterotypes of American Indians was presented, also a good experience. we then went to Hilburn hall to a computer lab and searched for lat-long points to create a search game for students. I ran in to my cousin (Dr.Darrell Schmitz) in the building and set a time for us to eat lunch next week. I enjoy the interaction between teachers, we can learn much from each other.

day 1 at GAETI at MSU
Today was the first day at MSU for the GAETI for me this summer. The teacher institute is to help us, teachers , to grasp the principals of common core, and technology to use in the class. It is exciting to visit the MSU campus and meet with other teachers to learn ways to improve our craft. Today we did a lot of housekeeping such as turning in paperwork and checking the schedule. We also set up gmail and blog accounts.
One of the most interesting sessions was a discussion between teachers on common core.
